At Firm Foundations Financial Group, we believe that financial planning isn’t a single event to be checked off a to-do list. Instead, it’s an ongoing journey—one that grows and evolves as your life, your goals, and your circumstances change. Over time, careers shift, children grow, markets fluctuate, and laws evolve. Each of these moving pieces has an impact on your financial plan. The key to staying confident is not to react to changes in a rush, but to anticipate them with thoughtful preparation.
To bring structure and rhythm to this journey, we’ve developed what we call our Service Calendar. This calendar is more than a scheduling tool; it’s a framework for intentional, season-by-season conversations with our clients. By aligning important financial reviews with the natural rhythm of the year, we ensure that nothing falls through the cracks and that every aspect of your plan receives the attention it deserves.
Just as farmers plant, cultivate, and harvest in different seasons, wise financial planning happens in cycles. Each quarter brings unique opportunities to review, refresh, and strengthen your financial foundation. And just as a farmer wouldn’t wait until autumn to start planting, we believe investors shouldn’t wait until year-end to begin their financial conversations.
In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the Winter season, the first stop in our annual journey together.
Winter: Building a Strong Start
The turning of the calendar into a new year always feels like a fresh beginning. Resolutions are made, calendars are flipped, and people naturally think about what they’d like to achieve in the months ahead. For our clients, winter represents the perfect opportunity to pause, reflect, and reset their financial life.
Think of winter as the season of foundations. Just as a home is only as strong as its base, a financial year is only as successful as the groundwork laid at the start. Winter is when we help clients gather the right information, set priorities, and put strategies in place that can withstand the uncertainties of the year ahead.
We like to describe this season as “circling the wagons”—a time to regroup, consolidate, and make sure all the pieces of your financial picture are working together. This isn’t about reacting to what went wrong last year. It’s about proactively shaping the year you want to have.
Our Winter Service Calendar highlights several critical conversations and action items. Let’s explore each in more depth.
Preparing the CPA Tax Summary Letter
Taxes may not be the most exciting part of financial planning, but they are certainly among the most important. Each January, many clients begin gathering documents for their accountants or CPAs. Unfortunately, this process can often feel overwhelming.
To make life easier, for many of our clients we prepare a CPA Tax Summary Letter. This document consolidates prior-year transactions into a clear summary that your tax professional can easily interpret. Instead of fielding multiple calls and sifting through complex statements, your CPA receives a clean, organized overview prepared with accuracy and consistency. This step may seem small, but it creates significant value. It bridges communication between two of your most important advisors—your financial planner and your tax professional. The result? Less confusion, fewer errors, and a smoother filing experience.
Reviewing Income and Expenses: Cash Flow Clarity
If you don’t know where your money is going, it’s nearly impossible to make confident decisions. That’s why cash flow planning is one of the earliest and most essential winter tasks.
We sit down with clients to map out expected income sources and anticipated expenses for the year. For retirees, this may mean coordinating distributions, Social Security payments, and pensions against travel plans or healthcare costs. For younger families, it might involve balancing salary income with child-care costs, mortgages, or tuition.
Having this roadmap allows clients to see, in black and white, how their resources align with their goals. It provides peace of mind that they’re not overspending—and just as importantly, reassurance that they’re making progress toward their long-term aspirations.
Preliminary Roth Conversion Analysis
Tax laws change frequently, and opportunities to improve your long-term wealth don’t always stick around forever. One powerful tool we evaluate in winter is the Roth conversion.
For those unfamiliar, a Roth conversion involves moving money from a traditional IRA (which will be taxed upon withdrawal) into a Roth IRA (where future growth and withdrawals can be tax-free). While the conversion itself generates taxable income in the year it’s done, it can be an incredibly effective strategy for long-term tax efficiency—especially in years when tax rates are relatively low.
By reviewing Roth conversion opportunities early in the year, we ensure clients have time to weigh the benefits, prepare for tax implications, and adjust the strategy as the year unfolds. If Congress introduces reforms, such as new deductions or adjusted tax brackets, we’ll be ready to pivot. Acting early avoids the last-minute scramble that often arises in November and December.
Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) Review
For clients who are subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), winter is the time to map out the strategy. These mandatory withdrawals from retirement accounts aren’t just about compliance with IRS rules; they’re about designing a withdrawal plan that minimizes taxes and supports lifestyle goals.
If ignored, RMDs can create costly penalties—up to 25% of the amount that should have been withdrawn. But when addressed proactively, they can become an integrated part of a broader tax-efficient income strategy. We review not only the required amount, but also how to coordinate those withdrawals with other income streams, charitable giving strategies (such as Qualified Charitable Distributions), and cash flow needs.
529 and Annuity Portfolio Review
Education funding and annuity strategies are often overlooked because they sit slightly outside the “core” investment accounts most people monitor. Yet, both play a vital role in the broader financial picture.
Each winter, we take time to review 529 college savings plans and annuity contracts side by side. For parents or grandparents funding education, it’s essential to confirm that contribution levels align with tuition goals and that investment allocations match the time horizon. For annuities, we evaluate performance, fees, and income provisions, ensuring these tools are doing the job they were intended to do. By looking at these accounts in tandem, clients gain a more complete view of how their specialized assets fit into the overall plan.
Establishing a Distribution Plan for the Year
Finally, we help retirees and near-retirees design a distribution plan for the year. This isn’t simply about taking money out of accounts—it’s about withdrawing with intention.
For example, should withdrawals come from taxable accounts first, allowing retirement accounts to keep compounding? Or should we pull from IRAs to fill up a tax bracket, while preserving long-term capital gains strategies in brokerage accounts? The order matters, and it can have a lasting effect on how long your nest egg lasts.
By coordinating withdrawals with RMDs, Roth conversions, and projected expenses, we build a plan that’s sustainable, tax-efficient, and personalized to each client’s situation.
Why Winter Matters
When you look at this collection of tasks—tax letters, income reviews, Roth conversions, RMD planning, portfolio check-ups—they may seem like administrative chores. But when woven together, they form the foundation of a successful year.
Without this early work, investors risk missing deadlines, paying unnecessary taxes, or drifting through the year without clarity. With it, they start January with confidence and direction.
Think of it this way: professional athletes don’t just show up on game day. They train in the offseason, set routines, and practice fundamentals long before the competition begins. Winter financial planning is that offseason training—it prepares you to navigate the rest of the year with strength.
A Firm Foundation for the Future
At Firm Foundations Financial Group, we know that money is one of the most important aspects of a person’s life. It affects family security, lifestyle choices, retirement dreams, and even the legacy you leave behind. Navigating it all can feel increasingly complicated, especially with today’s shifting markets and ever-changing tax laws.
That’s why having a seasonal financial plan matters. By breaking the year into focused conversations, clients are confident and consistently moving toward their goals.
Winter is only the beginning. As the year unfolds, we’ll move through spring, summer, and fall—each with its own set of reviews and opportunities. But it all starts here, by laying a firm foundation.
If you’d like to explore how this framework could work for you, we invite you to reach out. A conversation today could set the stage for twelve months of clarity, confidence, and progress.
